A double spend is a fraudulent attempt to use the same account to make two separate transactions.
Double spending is particularly concerning in crypto currencies because digital information can quite easily be reproduced.
This was a very early concern with Bitcoin but they have introduced a mechanism that verifies each transaction to prevent double-counting.
