Altcoins is a shortened term for Alternative Coins. An Altcoin is a type of cryptocurrency that has the same decentralized, peer-to-peer principles as Bitcoin, but uses its own blockchain and has its own rules and regulations of operation. An example of an Altcoin is Ethereum or Ripple.
