Bitcoin Improvement Proposal.
A BIP is a standardized way to request to submit a change to the bitcoin ecosystem. Most BIPs request hard fork changes to the core protocol that require a majority of users and miners to agree on the change. Most that will have a positive effect on the bitcoin protocol. BIPs can be proposed by developers or anyone else who has coding knowledge.
